Haunted dungeon to host paranormal tours in Sandusky

SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Sandusky County officials are trying to create a new tourism destination for people interested in the paranormal.

In the basement of the Sandusky County Courthouse is a windowless dungeon, dating back to the 1840s. Recently, multiple paranormal groups deemed the dungeon haunted.

Visitors will soon be able to take a special paranormal tour of the facilities, called "Dungeon Descent."

The dungeon was built in 1840 to hold prisoners before the first Sandusky County jail was built. Prisoners sat in total darkness, in cells made of 3-foot-thick stone blocks.

After opening the dungeon to tours last November, visitors said they felt a surreal presence, so two paranormal groups came in and gathered evidence of floating orbs in infrared, and an ominous-looking figure at the end of a hallway.

Visitors will be trained in paranormal instruments, and will spend six hours in the dungeon, collecting evidence that will be examined later that night.

Officials say it is great to embrace local history to draw people to the area.

"History is not just about a date or a place, history is alive and breathing," said Katherine Rice, of the Sandusky County Convention and Visitors Bureau. "When you step into the building, you've stepped back into a piece of time that was before all of us, so you get to experience what it was like in 1840, and 1850, and 1890. And that makes it really unique."

The new tours will cost about $20 per person, and tickets go on sale April 22. Three are currently only three tours planned this year, and a 25 person limit per tour.
