OTTAWA COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Ohio National Guard's Civil Support Team was out on Put-in-Bay Thursday, conducting disaster training at the airport.

"We're honing our skills on WMD response, and working with civil authorities," said Lt. Col. Jeffery Suver.

The team joined forces with local first responders for the day-long training.

It started with a plane making an emergency landing. Then, the crews found the pilot dead because of a chemical spill or attack.

"[There's] one of these teams in every state," Suver said. "Our job is to interface and work with first responders – local, state, and federal – to identify these hazards."

The team learned about the proper safety procedures and the proper gear to wear. Jeffery said the training is essential.

"We like to come out and do this so we can get to know our first responders, so that if, for whatever reason, there happens to be a real incident, it's always nice to know our limitations and capabilities," he said.
