TIFFIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Officials in Tiffin are working on a plan to tear down two buildings they bought earlier this week on Market Street.

The former home of the Pryzm Hotel, and the warehouse directly behind it have become an eyesore in downtown Tiffin.

"The hotel has been vacant for probably approximately 10 years," said Tiffin Council President Paul Elchert.

On Monday, city council approved the purchase of the two buildings for $120,000, using money from their Venture Capital Fund. The previous owner showed no signs of doing anything with the property, so the city stepped in.

"Let's get it down," said Councilman Jim Roberts. "It's not going to do us any good sitting there, as it is, right now."

Demolition is expected to cost around $75,000, which is more than what's left in the Venture Capital Fund, so yesterday council approved to allow the city to take bids for demolition, hoping the bidding process will lower the final cost.

But officials say the final total will be money well spent.

"We're going to make some good use of the funds, and help create some economic development for the City of Tiffin," Elchert said.

No concrete plans are in place yet for the property after demolition, but officials know whatever goes in will be better than the current vacant buildings that left a bad first impression on visitors.

"This is the first thing they see after the cross the river bridge," said Roberts. "We just hope it will revitalize the city and revitalize the citizens a little bit."
