Perrysburg switches to automatic collection

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents of Perrysburg are noticing new blue and gray totes in their yards as the city switches to automated refuse and recycling collection.

Currently, about 72 percent of residents in Perrysburg recycle, but the city is hoping that number will increase with the new collection.

"Blue is for recycling, and gray is for trash," said Judy Hagen, program coordinator for Perrysburg.

The new totes are being delivered this week and next, but the collection begins the week of April 22, which is Earth Day. In the totes, residents will find directions of what will and will not be collected.

"Before, you had 18 gallons, and now you have a capacity of 96," Hagen said. "So all those pieces of cardboard you used to bring to drop-off, you can now recycle those curbside."

Hagen said the more residents that recycle, the better the use of tax dollars.

"Whatever we generate income from that recycling offsets the handling fee," she explained. "Whereas, if you take something to the landfill, that's trash. It costs us $43.18 to dispose of it."

Another perk is staff reductions. Due to retirements and the new one-manned trucks, staffing went from nine people to five. The city anticipates cost savings of $300,000 per year.
