NORTH BALTIMORE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

North Baltimore police are warning residents to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious hanging around cars. They say there has been an increase in car break-ins over the past week.

In the past week and a half, 8-10 vehicles have been broken into between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., all over town.

Police Chief Allan Baer says it's not the number of break-ins that's troubling, but how thieves are getting into the cars.

"What's unique is that person is actually shattering the window," Baer said. "That typically doesn't happen."

Police say whoever is responsible is looking for high-value items in plain sight. One victim left $1,500 from her tax returns inside her car.

Chief Baer says the suspect is armed with some kind of blunt object or weapon, and is not afraid of making noise.

"Break the window, make that noise, risk injury to himself to attract attention and potentially get caught to get these items out of these vehicles," he said.

Sue Senecal lives where some of the break-ins have occurred. She says from now on, she will keep a closer eye on the street for anything unusual.

"If I wake up in the middle of the night, I always look out the window," she said.

The chief has assigned more officers to the night shift in order to keep a closer eye on the streets.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call the North Baltimore Police Department at 419-257-2181.
