North Baltimore police arewarning residents to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious hanging aroundcars. They say there has been an increase in car break-ins over the past week.

In the past week and ahalf, 8-10 vehicles have been broken into between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., allover town.

Police Chief Allan Baersays it's not the number of break-ins that's troubling, but how thieves aregetting into the cars.

"What's unique is thatperson is actually shattering the window," Baer said. "That typically doesn'thappen."

Police say whoever isresponsible is looking for high-value items in plain sight. One victim left$1,500 from her tax returns inside her car.

Chief Baer says thesuspect is armed with some kind of blunt object or weapon, and is not afraid ofmaking noise.

"Break the window, makethat noise, risk injury to himself to attract attention and potentially getcaught to get these items out of these vehicles," he said.

Sue Senecal lives wheresome of the break-ins have occurred. She says from now on, she will keep acloser eye on the street for anything unusual.

"If I wake up in themiddle of the night, I always look out the window," she said.

The chief has assignedmore officers to the night shift in order to keep a closer eye on the streets.
