TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Turning the lens on the Point. As Toledo police gears up for installing phase two of crime cameras citywide, several communities are asking for cameras in their neck of the woods, including some residents in Point Place.

When the cameras started going up in Toledo last summer, their locations were determined based on crime data. Although Point Place did not get any the first round, residents say they are ready to see some now, in hopes to curb vandalism and make their community safer.

Friendship Park Senior Center is a big part of the heart of Point Place. People meet there for fun and activities, and community members say vandals also meet there for destruction.

"They just love to carve their initials and names, and some names that shouldn't be carved in nothing!" said Al Crawford, Block Watch captain.

Crawford has lived in Point Place his whole life. He says his eyes have seen the after effects of vandal's handywork: breaking windows, setting fires in trash cans, and even damaging and removing picnic tables.

"Seniors here at this center are very concerned about their neighborhoods and their own safety. And we work together pretty doggone well," said Crawford.

Phase one of the crime camera initiative focused on the central city, downtown, and areas of high crime.

"If you put enough cameras in the violent crime areas, the criminals are going to go some place else. This might be one of the places they would like to go," said Monica Jankowski.

As the Toledo Police Department gears up for phase two of its crime camera initiative, Point Place residents say they would be thrilled to see a sky cop camera in their neighborhood.

In the meantime, neighbors say they will continue to watch out for one another and do whatever it takes to keep their streets safe.

"If I have to put my own personal camera out here in this aisle way and hook it up, I will do it," said Crawford.
