Runaway murder suspect arraigned Monday

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An accused murderer and escape artist went before a judge Monday, arraigned on murder charges after a wild few days.

Jonathan Johnson, 23, was arraigned on murder charges tied to the death of Jonathan Morris, 22, back in October 2012, as well as burglary.

He is being held on a $800,000 bond in the Lucas County Jail. He will be back in court April 8.

Officers arrested Johnson Friday morning after a quick chase.

Saturday afternoon, Johnson briefly escaped from custody only to be recaptured several minutes later. He made his getaway while being transported back to the Lucas County Jail from a Toledo hospital.

Sheriff John Tharp says Johnson had been taken to the hospital for treatment of a stomach ailment. He was released from the hospital and on his way to be returned to jail by deputies when he slipped out of his leg shackles. Tharp says Johnson assaulted the deputies and bolted for Cherry Street.

Authorities set up a four-block search perimeter. After a 15-minute search, Johnson was found hiding on a back porch in the 100 Block of Palmer Street.

Tharp says additional charges are now pending against Johnson as a result of the escape attempt.
