TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A multimillion dollar project is taking shape along Toledo's riverfront in the Marina District.

The Schoonmaker Museum ship was moved to the Great Lakes Maritime Museum site back in the fall. This year, the other portions of the Maritime Museum project will fall into place.

In the very near future, work will resume to transform the land right in front of the Schoonmaker into a public park that will include maritime artifacts. A ribbon-cutting for that park is being targeted for June.

Also this year, work will begin in the building on site for the indoor museum portion.

Schoonmaker Museum director Paul LaMarre III, the man who first drew the concept for this Maritime Museum on a napkin, says this multi-faceted project is unlike any other for the preservation of Great Lakes history. He credits the Great Lakes Historical Society for making it a reality.

"There have been museum ships. There have been very worthy museum buildings. But to incorporate a public park with maritime artifacts that can be viewed any day of the week, anytime, the building, the ship, to actually experience Great Lakes history," said LaMarre.

As far as the future of Great Lakes shipping, the first overseas freighter of the season pulled into port Friday.
