(Toledo News Now) -

The revenue from the Ohio Turnpike bond proceeds will nearly triple the transportation funds invested in northern Ohio.

Thanks to able representatives like State Senator Randy Gardner, the interests of communities negatively impacted by the turnpike will be looked out for, for years to come.

In fact, if Governor Kasich signs the bill as passed, the turnpike revenue spend in northern Ohio will be about $1.8 billion dollars between 2014 and 2019. Senator Gardner played a key role in directing these monies to safeguard our bridges, overpasses and roads.

As passed, 90% of all revenue generated by turnpike bonds must be spent on transportation projects in northern Ohio.

And, the tolls for local turnpike trips of 30 miles or less will be frozen for 10 years. This was a classic case of Republican and Democratic representatives galvanizing behind a big idea. The favorable Senate vote was 27-6.

Is it too much to hope that the polarized politicians in Washington, DC can learn by example from what just happened in Columbus?
