MADISON TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) -

MadisonTownship leaders say the township's backup wells could be contaminated.

Thewells aren't currently being used, but officials say they want to make surethey're safe.

TownshipSupervisor Larry Richardson says the problem stems from an incident about 10years ago, when contaminated water was found near a Brazeway plant. Richardsonsaid Brazeway has been cooperative, and has agreed to replace the backup wellsif they're found to be unsafe.

Nowenvironmental consultants are being brought in to inspect the wells.

Thereare several homes in the area, where residents say they have had water concernsin the past, and are happy the township is checking on the wells.

"We'vebeen drinking bottled water for a long time now, so they do their testingaround here," said Felipe Villarreal, who lives near the backup wells. "They'refollowing protocol, so they need to do that."

Otherresidents say they have also switched to bottled water, as a precaution, butRichardson says the wells currently being used for the township are completelysafe and contaminant-free.
