$1.2M approved to upgrade Overland Industrial Park

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

As the new Jeep Cherokee has been unveiled, the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority continues its efforts to pump new life into the former Jeep Parkway site.

"I think the auto show unveiling is a new dawn for Toledo and northwest Ohio and what Chrysler's commitment is here. Taking that 100-year-old manufacturing site and redeveloping it, we're excited about the opportunities we think we can bring to Toledo with that redeveloped site," said Paul Toth, president of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority.

With environmental clean-up work out of the way, the port board on Thursday approved spending $1.2 million to install a road and utility lines at the Overland Industrial Park.

"We think we're far enough along, next month we'll have an opportunity in front of the board to approve our first vertical construction out there and the first tenant coming on the site," said Toth.

Located near Chrysler's Toledo Assembly Complex, Toth believes that will be the main selling point to attract auto suppliers.

"[What] we really haven't tapped into are those tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers that we think we can draw if we had a facility available for them, we can draw them back to the community. The cost of logistics and transportation continues to go up," explained Toth.

With the site being close to the expressways and a rail line, the hope is to attract other manufacturers, as well as transportation and logistics firms.
