Down to 3 candidates in TPS superintendent search

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools have narrowed down their candidates for the position of interim superintendent. There are now only three.

The board decided who of the five original candidates they wanted to bring in for interviews after about an hour and a half of discussion in executive session Wednesday night.

The three people they will interview are: Dr. Mike Zalar, the current superintendent of Oregon City Schools; Douglas Heuer, superintendent of Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools; and internal candidate Dr. Romules Durant, an assistant superintendent at TPS.

Board President Brenda Hill said these three candidates have what they're looking for.

"I will just say that we picked three people who we thought would fit in Toledo best, that's all," Hill said. "I'm not going to comment on pros or cons of them. Those are the people we selected that we thought might fit, and we want to question them more, so we'll see how things work out."

Whoever is selected will start as interim superintendent after Dr. Jerome Pecko's contract ends on July 31.

Hill said the board treasurer will contact each candidate and set up interviews for April 2 and 4. It could be just days after that that one of them is chosen.
