WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Wood County Juvenile Courts and Wood County Jobs and Family Services are teaming up to try to make a difference for teens in foster care or with a history in the courts.

The new program will match teens up with mentors based on compatibility, in the hopes of teaching some fundamental life skills, as well as to have a little fun.

"They will be working on doing such things as independent living skills, community service projects to teach our youth to give back to the community, and also fun activities," said Kelly Hickle-Lentz, of the Wood County Children's Services. "Doing things like going to baseball games and bowling, and different things like that."

Hickle-Lentz said there is always a need for foster kids to have more positive role models, and this program is a great opportunity for Wood County employees to make a difference.

"One of the reasons we're coming up with this program is to reach out to our surrounding areas and the county employees to say, ‘Hey, why don't you step up to be that role model?'" she said.

The program already has county employees eager to get involved.

"In a matter of two days of sending out our initial outreach, we had 11 different people contact us saying they're interested," said Hickle-Lentz.

Mentors are asked to make at least a 1-year commitment to volunteer, but the program coordinators expect many will stay longer.
