10th annual BGSU blood drive challenge

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Wednesday was the start of a national blood drive challenge between 256 schools, including Bowling Green State University.

The BGSU Latino Student Union is hosting the National Cesar Chavez Blood Drive Challenge for the 10th year in a row. The competition spans two days, and they say it's all about saving lives and remembering the legacy of Chavez.

The event kicked off Wednesday morning with the Bowling Green mayor and BGSU president. Student volunteers said they try to make the event fun for donors with music and an art competition.

Members of the Latino Student Union said the event is special because it's important to spread the word about the work of civil rights leader Chavez.

"Educating an entire campus on who Cesar Chavez was and the impact that he had on our community is very rewarding," said Mayra Lopez, with the student union. "I'm really excited for people to come and donate and save lives."

The drive will continue Thursday, March 28, at the BGSU Bowen-Thompson Student Union. It will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
