(Toledo News Now) -

Minimum wage could increase for the first time in six years, if legislation supported by Senator Sherrod Brown (D – Ohio) passes. Some local businesses owners are conflicted about the possibility.

"I would definitely have to not only cut hours, but I would have to cut staff, and not be able to give my employees the hours they want," said Lori Hanway, owner of A Taste of Amish Deli in Bowling Green.

Sen. Brown supports the Minimum Wage Act, which would increase the minimum wage to $10.10 over three years, and it would also raise wages for tipped workers, for the first time in over 20 years.

"Minimum wage still keeps you…below the poverty level, and people working as hard as minimum wage workers should be able to at least be above the poverty level," Brown said.

Hanway, however, says businesses like hers just can't afford the proposed higher wages.

"I do see businesses maybe not being able to stay open because they can't afford the labor," she said.

But Sen. Brown says we need a minimum wage that keeps up with inflation and the cost of living, and an increase in wages will boost the economy.
