Toledo fire truck may sell for just $1

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A proposal before Toledo City Council for approval calls for the city to sell a surplus fire engine to the Penta Career Center for $1.

Toledo Fire and Rescue has a 1990 E-One fire engine with a 50-foot aerial ladder and a 500-gallon booster tank and pump, and the school is looking to use it for instructions related to its Public Safety/EMT Fire Science program.

Lt. Matt Hertzfeld says the engine was taken out of service in 2010 and it's not cost effective to try to maintain it in the city's fleet.

"It's reached a point where it won't pass a pump test, which means we can't draw water in, there's a vacuum leak in it, but it's still a useable apparatus for someone," Hertzfeld said. "It's just seen the end of the service life for us."

Hertzfeld says the engine will be much more productive in an educational capacity to help mold future firefighters, people who some day may apply for a job with Toledo Fire and Rescue.
