TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The applications for Toledo Public Schools' new interim superintendent are in, and the board is preparing to look over the candidates in a special meeting Wednesday.

"It is important for us to take our time to make sure that we have the right person to take Toledo Public Schools into the future," said Bob Vasquez, a member of the TPS school board.

Five candidates have applied for the position. Now the board must decide which candidate, if any, will be right for the job.

"I think every one of us, of the five candidates, just wants what's best for Toledo, and most importantly, what's best for the students in the Toledo Public Schools system," said Catherine Smith, one of the candidates and a former TPS teacher.

Smith says the competition will be stiff, but the strong show of applicants is promising.

"I think that's awesome," she said. "That says a lot about the school district, that people are willing to take on a challenge, in a very public forum when customer…satisfaction, as we call it, is not high."

The district will meet tomorrow to determine if they would like to speak to any of the applicants in person. They say they hope to have an interim in place son, and that interim could potentially fill Dr. Pecko's shoes permanently.
