BG High School band heads to Washington next week

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Bowling Green High School band is getting national attention. Next week, they'll travel to Washington, DC to perform during the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

It's especially exciting for the band, because this is the first time they've performed in the capital since 1985.

After a competitive application process and 21 months of fundraising, 126 BGHS band members will be headed to DC.

They will have two performances, and their director says they've been working toward this for years.

"Most band students put in six, seven, or eight years of their childhood and their youth," said Karen Smith, BGHS Director of Bands. "They started in fifth or sixth grade, they've been practicing, playing and performing, representing this community for all of their youth, basically, and this is sort of the icing on the cake."

The band will leave Bowling Green on April 2, and students said they are extremely excited for their week in Washington.
