TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo police just wrapped up a 10-day target enforcement blitz to crack down on crime in what they call a hot spot in the Glass City.

From March 15 through 24, the Toledo Police Department conducted a target enforcement action around the clock on the east side. The enforcement area was bounded by Front Street, Elgin Avenue and White Street, Nevada Street and Oak Street. The area was chosen because of the high number of burglaries and robberies, when compared to other parts of the city.

During this time period, there were more than 200 arrests, 50 on-view felony charges and eight search warrants executed. One sign of success from the operation was the fact that during this time frame, there were no robberies within the target area.

In addition to police response, other city departments participated by cleaning the area and identifying buildings for demolition.

"We're trying to actually demolish some buildings that are - have been nuisances, clean up some of the garbage around there, and now that we've identified the problem locations and the problem people that were causing a lot of the crime there, hopefully we'll see a difference," said Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the TPD.

This comprehensive strategy relied heavily on input from the community. A partnership with Block Watch and other organizations in east Toledo were critical in identifying problem locations.

A follow-up with community partners to discuss results of the operation is scheduled for April 3 at 6 p.m. at the East Toledo Family Center.
