(Toledo News Now) -

Parts of the village of Ottawa Hills will be noticing Columbia Gas crews along the streets since a project kicked off Monday.

About 1,200 services are being upgraded in the village. Columbia Gas began the first step in the process of replacing cast iron infrastructure with new plastic piping.

Monday was the first step in the process, where crews took video of the project area. Next, they will upgrade the main line, then the customer's service line, before they finish the project with restoration. This is all part of a 25-year, multibillion dollar project across the state to replace more than 4,000 miles of its natural gas delivery system.

"This project specifically is $3.8 million in the Secor and Pelham area, a little bit of city of Toledo, and a large portion of it is in Ottawa Hills. So, it's one project, as part of a 25-year-initiative," said Jason Copsey, external affairs specialist with Columbia Gas.

The project began in Ottawa Hills, so the work will be completed before the village begins its street reconstruction.

Some Toledoans spoke out about their concerns with the Toledo Area Water Authority (TAWA). Urging the Mayor's Office and City Council to consider how they feel TAWA is currently proposed isn't acceptable. Nick Komives is the chair of the water quality and sustainability committee.
