Police are working to find out what led up to a deadly shooting Sunday.

According to police, a woman was shot at Southland Shopping Center at Byrne Road and Glendale Avenue, and the man suspected in that shooting, then turned the gun on himself at his home on Kirk Street in Maumee.

As friends and family prepare to remember Kaitlyn Gerber Monday night with a vigil, police are still piecing together what happened. They say Gerber and Jashua Perz were in an on-and-off again relationship and Perz had a criminal past.

According to the Toledo Police Department, Gerber had a restraining order against Perz, but he continued to contact her even while he was in jail. According to police reports, Perz was released from jail just a month ago after he was convicted of assaulting Gerber. Records also show he was a registered sex offender.

The ordeal unfolded around 11:30 Sunday morning. Gerber called police saying her ex-boyfriend, Perz, was chasing her through the streets of south Toledo trying to kill her. Police say by the time they arrived, it was too late. Moments after killing her, he then killed himself.

"When I realized this was Kaitlyn, the shock is overwhelming, the devastation, the tragedy. This was a wonderful person just starting her life and its gone by a monster," said Pastor Scott Weaver.

Gerber had been attending Whispering Winds Church in Maumee for several years, gearing most of her time towards the youth. However, Weaver says she stopped attending in recent weeks, over fear of her ex-boyfriend harming her or others at the church.

"She was afraid of putting other people in danger. Again, shows what an amazing person she is. Her first thought was others," said Weaver.

Weaver says he believes Gerber did her best to prevent this tragedy.

"She did everything right and yet, still this happened, but I still think the most important thing is to say something. Don't keep it to yourself. Let people know," said Weaver.

Gerber's church family is pulling together during their tragic loss.

"There is shock, because you never believe that it could happen to somebody you know. Just to say the words, 'a friend on mine was shot,' you just never expect to say that. It's always somebody else. And I think that's something else these kids are dealing with. It's just so unexpected," said Weaver.

Weaver also said the Whispering Winds congregation is looking towards developing a domestic violence foundation in Gerber's honor.

There will be a candlelight vigil for Gerber at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Southland Shopping Center.

An investigation is ongoing.
