City council votes: TPD Chief Diggs officially rehired

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police Chief Derrick Diggs is no longer enjoying his retirement.

A Tuesday afternoon vote by the City Council was 10-2 in favor of reappointing Chief Diggs as Chief of Police.

The chief's brief retirement was merely a technicality to protect his pension, before his expected quick return to work.

Chief Diggs participated in the Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP), which helps stagger the retirement of police and fire personnel to avoid huge numbers retiring all at once. Participants pay into their pensions, but are required to retire after eight years of enrollment.

The program does not prohibit a person from being re-hired, or seeking other employment someplace else.

Diggs has served the Toledo Police Department for 35 years. He was reappointed as acting chief Monday, and was confirmed by council as expected.
