Mayor Bell to present water rate increase proposal

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell is presenting Toledo City Council on Friday with a proposal to increase water rates to help pay for repairs and improvements at the Collins Park Water Treatment Plant.

The plan calls for the average home owner to pay an additional $23.04 in 2014, with a total of $124.80 worth of increases being implemented through the year 2018.

For seniors and those with a Homestead discount, the increases will total $31.24 per year by 2018.

"It comes down to about $5.75 a quarter, and that's really not that much for what we'll be able to do," Mayor Bell said. "We've actually been talking about the water-related issues for the last three years...We need to make these repairs, and we need to do them immediately."

Public Utilities Director David Welch said the increase would fund about $314 million in capital projects, the majority of which will be to bring the treatment plant up to speed.

"The main body of the plants was built and finished in 1941. We are still using some of the same technology from 1941," Welch said. "In addition, our water lines are, on average, about 75 years old."

Welch said if the proposal is approved, most projects would begin in the next year or two.

Council will be holding hearings to determine if the increases will be approved.
