Oregon police sergeant accused of drunk driving

An investigation is under way after an off-duty Oregon police sergeant is accused of driving under the influence.

Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre says Sergeant Tony Castillo was pulled over by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper for speed and weaving erratically. He says it happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning on Miami Street near Interstate 75.

Navarre says Castillo refused a breath and field sobriety test so he was arrested and charged with OVI. He says currently, Castillo is back at work because his job duties do not include driving.

Castillo could face internal discipline depending on the outcome of an administrative investigation and this pending criminal case.

According to Navarre, Castillo has been with the department for more than 20 years and to his knowledge, has not had any previous OVI charges.

The Oregon Police Department wrote the following response to the incident on its Facebook page:

"The recent arrest of an Oregon Police Officer for Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated (OVI) has generated a lot of media attention and comments from our Facebook followers. This is understandable. We as a society hold police officers to a higher standard, as we should. This arrest took place in the City of Toledo and will be adjudicated in the Toledo Municipal Court. At this time, the officer has been charged - he has not been convicted. I can assure everyone that this matter is being taken very seriously. In addition to the criminal charges being filed, the Oregon Police Division has initiated an administrative investigation. Depending on the outcome of this investigation and the pending criminal case in Toledo Municipal Court, the officer may also be facing internal discipline.

Chief Mike Navarre
Oregon Police Division"
