'March for Meals' campaign kicks off in Wood County

WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Wood County Committee on Aging has made it a mission to make sure no senior citizen goes hungry.

The nonprofit agency serves residents over the age of 60.

During the month of March, workers try to raise awareness and funds for the Meals on Wheels program.

Its campaign, "March for Meals," made more than 87,000 meals for home-bound seniors in 2012, serving more than 72,000 group meals at its center.

Organizers say the yearly fundraiser is important because for many individuals, the meal they receive from Meals on Wheels may be the only nutritious food they have in a day.

Home delivered meal clients receive one hot meal a day, Monday through Friday.

In the fall, two shelf-stable meals are delivered, in case of inclement weather.

The Committee on Aging is looking for more volunteers in the communities it serves (BG, Perrysburg, Pemberville, North Baltimore, Wayne, Walbridge, and Rossford) to help deliver the meals.

Volunteers must meet the following requirements:

  • Valid driver's license and current vehicle insurance
  • One (1) hour per week or month during lunch hours of 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Service areas are in-town around the respective sites
  • Hot and cold components to the meals
  • Can be done with a "buddy" or alone – great for families
  • Select the best day, Monday through Friday, to fit one's schedule

Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Jacqueline Metz, Volunteer Coordinator, at 419-353-5661 or 1-800-367-4935. You can also find a volunteer registration form here.
