Council to vote on mayor, council salary bump

Toledo City Councilman Adam Martinez Toledo City Councilman Adam Martinez
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

An independent panel has recommended increases in salary for the Toledo mayor and council members.

City council received the recommendations from the Salary Review Commission Friday, and now council will decide whether or not to accept them.

The commission is suggesting the future pay for the mayor increase from $122,400 to $136,000 per year, which would make up for the 10 percent decrease approved four years ago. They would also increase council salaries from $27,500 to $32,500, with the council president receiving an extra $4,000 per year.

"I'm pleasantly surprised," said Councilman Adam Martinez. "We'll have to see if it passes council. It's always difficult during hard economic times to talk about pay raises or increases."

But the increases, if approved, would not take place immediately.

"I think the salaries are warranted," said Councilman Mike Collins. "I will be supporting it, however I am not voting for a raise for myself."

If approved, they would go into effect for the next term. For the mayor and at-large council seats, the increase would take effect in 2014. For district council seats, 2016.
