Lucas County property owners can challenge new values

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On the heels of Lucas County property owners paying their first round of tax bills using the new values set by the Auditor's office, Commissioner Pete Gerken said anyone who thinks the new value isn't right can try to make things right.

"Nobody likes paying taxes," he said. "The nice thing about our system in Lucas County and Ohio is if you don't agree with it, you can challenge it."

April 1 is the deadline for property owners to file a complaint with the Board of Revision, and once that complaint is filed, hearings will be scheduled between May and October.

At the hearing the property owner will make their case before a 3-member panel made up of representatives from the Auditor, Commissioners and Treasurer's offices.

"A couple of years ago we did over 13,000 cases, had three rooms working five days a week, eight hours a day," Gerken said.

While many complaints are filed by people seeking to lower their value and possibly lower their tax bill, Gerken expects many others to file for a different reason.

"We've seen a little bit of reverse," he said. "We have had people come in and say we have under-valued their property, especially if they want to sell it. That is one of the calculations that go into an offer to buy."
