Maumee assistant superintendent to 'double dip'

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It is becoming a familiar trend for public employees: Retire from the job, then be rehired to ensure retirement funds stay intact. Maumee's assistant superintendent is the latest to join the trend and the superintendent could be next.

There was talk that Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith would retire in August and be rehired, but he confirmed Monday he will not be retiring from the district.

However, at a school board meeting a couple weeks ago, board members approved the retirement and rehiring of Assistant Superintendent Ken Aerni, effective April 1. He is in his 35th year as an educator. The board has yet to determine at what pay Aerni will be rehired, but it could be at a smaller rate than he is currently paid, which is around $123,000 a year.

Superintendent Smith said while he is unsure of Aerni's reasoning behind retiring and being rehired, he did mention that new changes to COLA, or cost of living adjustments for public employees, would cause less money to be collected in retirement if Aerni retired after June 2013.

Smith said he had planned to retire then be rehired, but other options became available and he will not be retiring from the district later this year.
