Ancient Order of Hibernians celebrate Irish heritage

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

They say on St. Patrick's Day, everybody is Irish.

But at a Sunday party in West Toledo, everybody really was Irish.

It was the Ancient Order of Hibernians 20th annual St. Paddy's Day party.

The worldwide organization strives to keep the Irish culture alive.

The Toledo chapter has about 150 members.

The word 'Hibernian' comes from Julius Caesar's name for Ireland.

"It's just a touch of one's self. Where you came from and why we are a people. A unity thing that's nice to know," said Hibernian member Tom McCabe.

The party is a family-friendly event.

Kids are encouraged to dance their version of an Irish jig.

There's beer served but nobody gets out of line.

Cook Tony Gale served up 250 pounds of corned beef.

He's got a special Irish recipe.

"For me, I like to cook it for two hours, take it out, let it stand for an hour so we can cut it without shredding and falling apart. Let it stand, stay soft and moist and fire it up for the day of the event," said Mr. Gale.

And this is no blarney.

Folks at the event are proud to be Irish.

"I guess because you got to have fun once in awhile," said William O'Shea.

"Well, actually, the Irish built this country. If it wasn't for the Irish, the British would still be running it," said Maurice Buckley.

And as the Ancient Order of Hibernians like to say, if you're lucky enough to be Irish, then you're lucky enough.

It was an afternoon of bowling but not necessarily about strikes and spares. The day was more about developing friendships between kids and adults with disabilities and law enforcement.
