TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo's historic Woodlawn Cemetery is making some changes.

They've cleared six acres of land and cut down many trees, but the 160-year-old cemetery has special plans for those trees.

"We're actually contracted by Care Casket Company, and what they do is use quite a few of the trees to make caskets," explained Patricia Toneff, associate director of the cemetery.

The north side of the cemetery currently looks like a tornado ripped through it, but Toneff said they needed to clear out some space, and they aren't finished with the project.

"We need space for the traditional lawn burials, as well as cremations, and this was the area that was decided would take to the clearing," she said. "We're going to replant it with high-quality trees that are in keeping with the rest of our arboretum."

Toneff also said she is proud of the cemetery's rich history, and hopes that the new space will draw visitors for more than just sad occasions.

"They can learn about history, they can engage in [bird-watching], and the trees," she said. "They get three big areas we can impact the community with."

The project is expected to take a couple of years to complete.
