BGSU looks at campus-wide smoking ban

BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Bowling Green State University is considering a wider ban on smoking on campus.

Smoking is already only allowed 35 feet from campus buildings, but last summer, the Ohio Board of Regents recommended that all Ohio universities become smoke-free. Now BGSU is considering the suggestion.

The school put together a committee of faculty and students to create a proposal to ban smoking on campus, but some students have reservations.

"It's just gonna make a hassle for other smokers," said Aaron Reisner, a student and smoker. "I'm not very happy about it."

Even non-smokers are having trouble.

"I like the idea of it, but it just does not seem very plausible," said Jeff Heidelberg, a non-smoker student.

They think the smoking ban could urge some students to quit, but it could also force smokers to find different ways to use tobacco.

"Like the smokeless tobacco like dip, or even worse the electronic cigarettes that you can actually smoke inside," Heidelberg said.

Reisner said he thinks the current policy is strict enough, and even expressed concerns about student safety.

"I don't think it's gonna be good for people who smoke, especially women, having to go out to remote regions at night to have a cigarette," he said.

The committee currently working on the proposal will present to the university in May.
