Hancock County Red Cross looking for disaster volunteers to train

HANCOCK COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Hancock County Red Cross is looking for volunteers to train to aid victims in disaster situations.

A training session will be held this weekend for volunteers to learn how to run a Red Cross shelter. It will be the second time the Hancock County Red Cross offers shelter operation simulations this year.

The goal is to get volunteers trained as quickly as possible so that if an emergency arises, they have a large, qualified pool of volunteers ready to get to work. There are currently 50 trained disaster volunteers in Hancock County.

"We count on trained volunteers to be there 24 hours a day, ready to help when a disaster happens," said Executive Director Todd James. "So the more volunteers we can get trained and ready to respond, the safer our communities are."

Last year, more than a dozen volunteers deployed to help in Superstorm Sandy.

The classes are free, and open to anyone who registers beforehand. They will be held Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Findlay Red Cross.
