SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

With a decreased budget and the costly price of salt, Springfield Township has found another, more affordable way to keep the roads clear of snow and ice.

During a tough economy, communities are looking for ways to cut back and save money. The Springfield Township Public Services Department is no exception.

Director Mike Hampton decided to make the switch from salt to brine in order to save the township money. Normally, it would cost about $290 of salt for three miles of roadway. Now the same distance will cost about $25 or less.

Not only did the township save money from using brine, they also saved money by creating the spreader themselves on top of one of its maintenance trucks.

"We purchased a 500-gallon tank, and then just taking some PVC, and an electric pump, we were able to - and a couple pieces of metal - we were able to fabricate our own, our own brine truck. And it works wonderful," said Hampton.

Hampton says brine is a wet liquid and adheres to the pavement immediately, so it will not affect cars traveling the roadways.
