Officers recovering after deadly traffic stop shooting

MIDDLEFIELD, OH (WOIO) -

Two Middlefield police officers are recovering after being shot during a traffic stop on Sunday evening. The man who opened fire on the officers was fatally shot.

Officers pulled the driver, identified as 42-year-old James L. Gilkerson, over around 6 p.m. in the area of North State Avenue near Tare Creek Parkway.

Gilkerson exited his vehicle armed with a semi automatic rifle, and started shooting at the officers. The officers returned fire, and killed the Mentor on the Lake man.

The female officer sustained serious injuries to her left hand and fingers, shrapnel was embedded in her right wrist and she also sustained a gunshot wound to her left thigh. She underwent surgery at Metro and remains hospitalized.

The male officer sustained minor injuries to his left knee from flying fragments. He was treated and released from University Hospital in Geauga and is home recovering.

The Geauga County Sheriff's Office and Ohio BCI are both investigating.
