Beware of tax season scams

(Toledo News Now) -

The April 15 deadline to file taxes is right around the corner, but an IRS spokesperson said rushing to file could mean falling for a scam.

Ohio IRS Spokeswoman Jennifer Jenkins said scammers are using a number of ways to con people out of their money during tax season. Their methods may include emails, and even Facebook and Twitter.

But Jenkins said the IRS uses only one way to contact people.

"We correspond through the U.S. Postal Service, and maybe follow up by the phone," Jenkins said. "But again, if there's an email, it's probably a scam, a phishing attempt to get you to provide personal information."

She said if you receive something in the mail and you think it's a scam, 9 times out of 10, it is.

If you suspect a scam attempt, contact the IRS directly at 1-800-TAX-1040.
