2 Lucas County sirens fail in statewide tornado drill Wednesday

(Toledo News Now) -

The start of March means spring weather is not too far away, but with the warmer temperatures often comes severe thunderstorms. Severe Weather Awareness Week, which kicked off March 2, is an opportunity for Ohioans to go over their disaster plan and prepare an emergency kit.

On Wednesday, a statewide drill was conducted to test all Ohio emergency sirens at 9:50 a.m. Schools also took the test as an opportunity to practice tornado drills.

Two Lucas County outdoor warning sirens failed the test. According to emergency management officials, sirens in Swanton Township and south Toledo along the Anthony Wayne Trail failed.

EMA Director Matthew Heyrman said the siren in south Toledo seems to be functioning and it could have been a communication failure.

Now, officials will follow up on the report in Swanton with a test to determine what may have caused the siren to fail.
