TPS students encouraged to start college preps now

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The philosophy of the group Partners in Education is the sooner the better.

It's never too early to encourage your kids to pursue a college education.

On Saturday what was called a "College Coach" workshop was held at the University of Toledo and sponsored by Partners in Education.

100 Toledo Public School students in grades five through seven, their parents and educators attended.

The message is that if parents wait until high school to discuss college aspirations with their kids, it may be too late.

By starting young, you instill good study habits and promote career goals.

"The parents are going to make sure their kids get to school, do homework and ask questions, helping expose them to different careers. Our program helps them do that," said Becky Spencer of Partners in Education.

It wouldn't be a "College Coach" workshop if the kids didn't hear from a real coach.

UT Womens Basketball coach Tricia Cullop gave them some inspirational advice.

"You can never start too late. We start recruiting young, even in basketball. But for their education, it starts now. As young as they are, you can never wait another day to start investing," she says.

One mother at the workshop, Tomara Carter, says she is already investing in the future of her four kids.

"It's a good experience for them to learn a lot. They can also follow behind me. I'm a college graduate," said Ms. Carter.

Her son Elijah has plans.

"I want to be a police officer," said Elijah.

"I want to be a teacher because I'm smart and get straight A's," added his sister, Takayla.

Two kids who sound like they're headed "straight" to college.
