Scammers using local officers' names in fraud

It is a new wrinkle in a scam crooks have been using for a long time. Perrysburg Township Police say an area woman was contacted by someone claiming to be an FBI agent.

The person even used the name of a Perrysburg Township Detective, saying the federal agency was working with local police to distribute funds from overseas.

The scammer asked the woman to wire $3,000 in order to release the money. The scammer then called back the next day asking for more money.

"There's no way any possibility that our officers are going to assist an agency with this kind of a scam," said Perrysburg Township Police Detective James Gross.

Gross says any time someone asks for money to be sent in order to release more funds, the call is probably a scam.
