TPS accepting applications for interim superintendent

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Public Schools decided Thursday they will not name an interim superintendent for after Dr. Jerome Pecko retires just yet.

They will be looking to in-house candidates first, but will also be accepting applicants from outside the district. There are currently 23 people in the TPS system (including Pecko) that have the license to be an interim superintendent.

"If they are external, they have to come in and they have to learn," explained Board President Brenda Hill. "So if they're internal, and we interview them and we feel that they are full of energy and dynamic and they have everything together and we decide to choose them, then they can just start running as soon as they get the position."

The school board will be accepting applications until March 22. No timeline has been set yet for when they will choose an interim superintendent, but Hill said the goal is to have someone hired in time to have Dr. Pecko assist with the transition before he retires July 31.

Hill also stressed the position is only interim, at least for now.

"There are a lot of things that a new person would have to go through, and might not want to come if they see they have all these hurdles to go over," Hill said. "But if we have everything calm, we might have a better chance."
