Diocese of Toledo commemorate Pope Benedict XVI's final day

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Diocese of Toledo made sure Pope Benedict XVI's departure was honored in the Glass City.

In honor of the pope's last day, Bishop Leonard Blair held a mid-day Mass in celebration of the legacy that Pope Benedict is leaving at the Vatican.

At noon Thursday, Blair was joined by a full congregation at St. Francis de Sales in downtown Toledo. The Knights of Columbus added some flair to the Mass and students from local Catholic schools joined in the service, as well.

The mood was celebratory as the congregation gathered to reflect and commemorate Pope Benedict's time in the papacy. Still, Blair says there is sadness to the pope's retirement.

"There is a certain sadness to what we're doing, but we're still happy to have him in our midst at the heart of the church for a life of prayer, and we are also going to be asking God for the gift of the Holy Spirit to elect a worthy successor," said Blair.

Blair says that Pope Benedict XVI will be remembered as a kind and gentle person and he is thankful so many of Toledo's youth came to the Mass.
