TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The University of Toledo's (UT) theatre department is putting on "Three Sisters," a play by Anton Chekhov this weekend.

"The production is a result of many years of research that started when I was an actor at the National Theatre of Bucharest, shortly after the fall of Communism, and continued throughout my years in NYC," said Director Cornel Gabara, Associate Professor of Theatre, Acting/Directing at UT.

The play is a drama, which examines the decay of the privileged class as represented through three sisters and their search for meaning in the modern world, according to a UT press release.

Gabara incorporated a variety of acting styles to make the play more relevant to contemporary audiences.

"These practices are common in major theatre hubs, such as New York City," he said.

The set features a pattern of openings in the floor, which will allow the set to be lit from underneath, creating an unusual, surreal effect.

Performances were February 22-24, and will also be February 27-March 3 at UT's Center for Performing Arts. Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $12 for the general public, $10 for alumni and seniors, $7 for students. They are available here, or by calling the box office at 419-530-2375.
