Port Clinton police may have suspect in child porn case

PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Police may have a suspect in the case of child pornography found in a box of books at an auction house in Port Clinton.

Police say a woman found the materials in a box she purchased at the auction house in January and they have been searching for the person responsible ever since.

The police department in Port Clinton says they are watching a suspect whom they believe may be responsible for this case. However, they say because that person has not been formally charged, they will not release his or her name.

Police are keeping quiet on the case for more than one reason.

"Every police officer has taken an oath to protect and serve. I'm protecting and I'm trying to protect the victim by minimizing any further trauma, but yet, serving the public by bringing the potential suspect to justice," said Det. Sgt. Corbin Carpenter.

Detectives have been uncovering details and building evidence. They even determined who the young victim was and the footage was taken within city limits.

"We were able to view the backdrops of some of the footage, and through the investigation, and some other checking, we were able to potentially narrow it down to one location," explained Carpenter.

It has been just over a month since the discovery and detectives say they are in talks with the prosecutor now on possible charges. According to detectives, this case could go to a grand jury.

The main message they want to send to people in Port Clinton is that their children are safe.

"We have a potential suspect that has not been named or formally charged. I can say that there is no immediate threat to the victim at this time," said Carpenter.
