Sylvania students looking for votes to patent life-saving watch

SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A group of Sylvania students who call themselves the Mutant Minds is competing for online votes in the First Lego League Innovation Award competition. They have invented a smart watch called the Angel Assist that calls 911 if a person is not responsive after a fall.

Here is the group's description from the voting page:

"The team came up with the idea for a device that seniors could use daily, encouraging their independence and engagement in the community. We spoke to many professionals as well as seniors, who explained that the senior population tends to worry about falling and hurting themselves. This may cause them to not want to leave their homes. Our invention is a device that would alert emergency response personnel in the event of a person falling and not being able to recover from the fall. Team members met with senior citizens, a professor of Physics, emergency response people, and explored the feasibility of putting the device into the marketplace. This project not only allows seniors to remain independent, but cuts out the cost of a "middle man" service company that calls 911 for them. We decided to write a patent for our idea because our community contacts encouraged our team to pursue this much needed device for the senior community."

The group who wins the grand prize will receive $20,000 to further develop their innovation.
