EDITORIAL: Gov. Kasich comes to town

(Toledo News Now) -

Governor Kasich was in town this week. He gave a speech that was a little surprising.

I have heard him before, so I was aware that he has a fervent delivery style. He resonates with passion and spins stories about people he has met since he became governor.

This speech started with turning Ohio's deficit into a surplus. He talked a lot about making Ohio a great state again. He believes it all starts with Ohio being a business-friendly environment, which then leads naturally to tax reductions and job creation.

The surprise for me was the amount of time he devoted to compassionate conservatism. He expressed great concern for the unemployed, the poor, the uneducated, the mentally ill, and the people who have fallen on hard times.

The speech, which was relatively free-form and informal, tried to paint a picture of a man who has been blessed and wants to use his good fortune and power to do good. He believes he is leading Ohio to a better place. At times he sounded like a preacher at an old-fashioned revival.

Kasich says we can change. If his speech is any indication, he wants us to know that he has changed. I wonder if this is part of his groundwork for a change of address…someplace, say, on Pennsylvania Avenue?

The recent decision of ProMedica's Board of Trustees to enter into a transfer agreement with Capital Care Network, Toledo's last remaining abortion facility, just doesn't make sense.
