Councilman proposes changes to Toledo's water billing system

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A new memo sent from the mayor's office to members of Toledo City Council says it would cost the average water customer $94 a year to implement a monthly billing system for all residential customers. It would cost $130 a year for homestead discount customers.

Proposals by Councilman Adam Martinez call for the city to switch to monthly billing, as well as extending payment periods from 15 business days to 30 calendar days. Martinez also proposed allowing people renting properties to set up accounts.

Jerry Wiser says the city should just stick with the current billing system.

"How are they going to do that? They read it quarterly, four times a year. I don't know how they're going to change it. It's just costly. It's very costly to do that. You'd have to redo the whole system," said Wiser.

Jodi Valdez already pays monthly on a voluntary basis.

"I love it. I don't get behind, it's $34. It's not like a big chunk of money," said Valdez.

City Council will hold a committee meeting on the proposed changes to water billing and deposit policy, as well as a water rate affordability study, Monday at 4 p.m. at One Government Center.
