WEST SPRINGFIELD (WSHM/AP) -

West Springfield police have opened both lanes of traffic on Route 5 between the North End bridge and Memorial Bridge, after a train derailment kept that part of the road closed for more than 24 hours.

Two tanker cars that derailed in West Springfield will be cleared by midnight Friday, according to West Springfield Mayor Gregory Neffinger.

Officials with train company CSX say that faulty metal in West Springfield railroad tracks caused two tankers to derail Thursday night. Officials with CSX said the deformed metal did not show up in routine X-rays used to examine the company's thousands of miles of railroad tracks nationwide.

Thursday evening, wheels on two train tankers came off the tracks on the trestle that crosses the Connecticut River between West Springfield and Springfield.

Friday afternoon West Springfield police evacuated residents on several streets as crews attempted to right the train, which was carrying highly flammable liquids. West Springfield Mayor Greg Neffinger says residents on Chapin Street, Globe Street, Railroad Street and Bridge Street have all been taken to a nearby school while crews work on the train. Neffinger said those residents would be allowed back to their homes around 7:00 p.m.

CSX officials brought in a crane in from New York to attempt to right the tankers and put them on wheels, where they will be taken back to a CSX stock yard in West Springfield.

CSX officials say failsafes are still in place on both tankers. Neffinger noted that both tankers are double-walled and showed no signs of any leaks.

One of the two rail cars involved was empty but most recently contained a chemical called ethyl acetate, which is a product used in nail polish remover. The other car was full of a flammable substance called butyraldehyde that is used in the production of plastics and rubber products.
