3 Toledo homes robbed of copper pipes in 1 day

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo police are trying to figure out who is responsible after three different homes are stripped of their copper piping in one day.

"It's awful. It's awful everywhere," said Robert Willey, a home repairman.

It is something homeowners, police officers and repairmen have been noticing.

"Lot of places are getting broke into and copper pipes broken or taken out," said Willey.

A home on Garfield in east Toledo, a home in the 1500 block of Buckingham in central Toledo and a home in the 4100 block of Burnham in west Toledo have recently become the target of copper thieves.

"It's always been going on, but it's really more frequent today," said Willey.

Willey says he frequently gets phone calls from homeowners that need new plumbing because all their copper pipes have been stolen.

"I worry about it all night long. Worrying that someone's going to break into my house or my neighbor's and I keep a look out for them," said Toledo resident Debra Pesina.

Toledo police officials say they do too. The department has a specific detective assigned to these types of cases and he keeps in close contact with local scrap yards. Officials say that has already helped cut down on some of these thefts.

Still, some say they are going to keep locking their doors and keep a watchful eye.

"I think it's something to do with the economy. People want quick money," said Willey.

Anyone with information on who is responsible for these copper thefts can contact Toledo police at 419-245-3340.
