Dogs reunited with owner after ice rescue

LUCAS COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two dogs that got stuck on the ice in Point Place last Friday were reunited with their owner Tuesday.

Muffin and Lady, a black lab and golden retriever, were stuck wandering on a sheet of ice in Maumee Bay for hours on Friday before a Washington Township Fire and Rescue team saved them. As their owner Larry Jeffrey explained, they were probably just trying to get home.

Jeffrey said he gave the dogs to his brother last week, as he was about to move.

"He was getting on South 75 to get to West Virginia," Jeffrey explained. "I guess he had a flat or something, and when he opened the door, the dogs jumped out and took off running. [South] 75 is just down the road from my house, so they were trying to find their way home, I guess."

Jeffrey said he didn't even know that the dogs never made it home with his brother. He said he thinks neighbors recognized the dogs on the news and called the dog warden.

"These were particularly publicized dogs, so we were hopeful that someone would come forward and say that they owned the dogs," said Julie Lyle, Lucas County Dog Warden.

Jeffrey took Muffin home Tuesday, and said he will return for Lady Friday.

"I appreciate what they have all done for these dogs," he said. "I'll keep them now…I'm not giving them to nobody."

This record breaking September heat wave is about to come to an end.  Wednesday will be breezy, becoming cooler and less humid as a cold front moves through the area.  In need of rain?  There will only be an isolated shower or two possible. A high temperature of 92 degrees tied a record today. The high also made it six 90 degree days in-a-row, four records tied or broken. Wednesday will start off warm and humid, but be prepared for winds to shift to northerly...More >>
