New developer eyeing downtown Port Clinton

PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Parts of Port Clinton may have a new look in the near future.

According to city officials, a developer plans to share his ideas for improving the downtown district and along the waterfront.

"Right now we're just looking to see what could possibly improve our historic community, both on the waterfront and within our downtown buildings," said Laura Schlachter with the Chamber of Commerce. "We're open to ideas and suggestions."

Mayor Vincent Leone and Laura Schlachter have been in contact with Mike Rose of Washington Properties, based in Medina, Ohio.

Washington Properties is a real estate development firm that builds, leases and manages commercial office.

According to the company's website, Washington Properties was awarded ‘Best Historic Rehabilitation Award' from Downtown Ohio/Heritage Ohio for its reuse of historic property to create Liberty Street Commons, a three-story  development for retail and professional space in Downtown Wooster.

Schlachter said the city is excited to see what Rose has in mind for Port Clinton, based on his successful track record in Wooster and Medina.

"We have this amazing downtown that so many places would want to have…We're hoping that we can take all of our assets and build on them," said Schlachter.

City leaders are hopeful that changes will help bring more tourists and shoppers downtown within the next 10 years.

Rose will speak at a public meeting planned for Wednesday.

The meeting is at the Elks Lodge, 231 Buckeye Blvd., at 6 p.m.
